In JMS 430, I’ve been learning how essential digital tools are for modern journalism. Working with Excel has helped me see how raw numbers can support stories once they’re organized and analyzed correctly. Creating graphs and charts brings that data to life, making it easier for audiences to understand trends and connections at a glance. These skills go beyond the classroom; they’re the foundation for data-driven reporting that’s becoming standard in newsrooms today.
At the same time, building an Adobe Portfolio has been a valuable way to showcase the projects I’ve created throughout the semester. It’s more than just a digital résumé, it’s a curated space that reflects my growth as a multimedia journalist. Combining visual design, statistical tools, and storytelling has made me realize how digital fluency is no longer optional for communicators. It’s an integral part of how we engage, inform, and connect with audiences in the digital age.

Blog Reflection 1
This week in Digital Journalism, we’ve been learning about what it means to be a digital journalist and how our stories connect to the communities around us. I’ve realized that being a journalist today isn’t just about writing articles. It’s also about finding stories that matter to people and figuring out how to tell them in ways that feel real and relatable. Our discussion about “The Journalist and the Community” made me think about the issues that impact students every day, especially the ones we might overlook because they seem “normal.”
For my story idea, I want to focus on parking issues at San Diego State University. It’s something almost every student has dealt with. From circling lots for half an hour or to paying high fees for limited spaces, I think it’s a great example of how a small frustration can actually reflect bigger problems with accessibility and campus planning. I plan to talk with students, campus officials, and possibly parking services to get different perspectives. I’d also like to include photos or social media posts showing how students navigate the parking struggle. I think this story can spark a real conversation about what can be improved and how the university can better support its commuters.
